Minors


Minors help students diversify their educational experiences and allow them to complement their majors. Minors aid students in reaching their career objectives or applying to graduate school. Minors create opportunities for students to tailor and personalize their own educational experiences to their particular talents, interests, and goals. Minors are noted on a student’s transcript.

  1. A minor program must require a minimum of 15 credit hours.*

  2. A student must complete at least 9 credit hours of a minor program at Mercy University to receive credit on their academic transcript.

  3. Minors cannot be fulfilled solely through major requirements.

  4. A student cannot obtain a major and a minor in the same discipline.

  5. A student must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA within the minor in order to receive credit on their academic transcript.


*Individual programs may have requirements that exceed the minimum standards set for the University. Please see individual minor program requirements for additional details.

  • Biology

    • The Biology Minor is 17 credits in the following: 8 credits in course/course AND course/course. The remaining 12 credits must be at the level of BIOL200 or higher.)

  • Business Administration

  • Chemistry

    • The Chemistry Minor is 22 credits in the following: 12 credits in course/course, course/course, AND course/course. The remaining 10 credits may be selected from any combination of 200-level or higher chemistry (CHEM) courses.

    • *Courses satisfying the chemistry minor may also be counted toward general education requirements in concentrations outside of chemistry.

  • Cinema Studies

    • 15 Credits. Any grouping of (5) Cinema Studies courses.

  • Communication Arts**

    • 15 Credits. Any combination of Communication Arts courses, including any cross-listed courses. course Internship in Communication Arts may also be utilized with Program Director approval.

  • Computer Information Systems

    • To complete a minor in Computer Information Systems, students must earn 15 credits, including course, and four major courses.

  • Computer Science

    • To complete a minor in Computer Science, students must earn 15 credits, including course, and four major courses.

  • Conflict Resolution

  • Criminal Justice

    • Students must complete 15 credits in Criminal Justice to earn this minor. Note that you cannot major in Criminal Justice and minor in Criminal Justice.

  • Cybersecurity*

    • 15 credits required. The minor in Cybersecurity includes (5) courses, choosing among course, course, course, course, course, course, and course.

    • *Note, any course being used to fulfill students’ major requirements cannot be used towards the minor.

  • Digital Journalism

    • 15 Credits. Any grouping of (5) Digital Journalism courses.

  • English & Creative Writing**

    • Students of other majors can earn a minor in English & Creative Writing by completing any five English courses ranging from course to course. Speak with the Program Director of English to learn more.

  • Gender, Women's & Sexuality Studies

    • GWSS is an interdisciplinary minor that examines issues and perspectives related to gender and sexuality in the humanities, arts, and social sciences. Requirements for the minor would consist of 5 courses (15 sem. Cr. hrs.), with at least three at the 200-level or higher.

  • Healthcare Management

  • Health Science*

    • The Health Science Minor is designed for students seeking a foundation in public health and health promotion. Students who elect to minor in Health Science must complete HLSC 240 Global Health and Cultural Perspectives and course - Health Policy and Advocacy, which provide a framework for understanding major issues in public health and health promotion in the United States and around the world.

  • History*

    • 15 Credits. Students who choose to minor in History must complete four courses slotted under the five fields of study: United States, Europe, Asia, Atlantic World, and Ideas, Theories, and Practices. Two of these four courses must be at the 200-level or above. The remaining two courses may be taken as HIST 180-199. Students may also elect to take only one course between HIST 180-199 and three at the 200-level or above. Additionally, History Minors are required to take course: Intro Research Methods, a course focused upon historical methodology. This requires successful completion of course. History minors are not required to take course or course.

  • Latin American and Latino Studies*

    • Students who choose to minor in Latin American and Latino Studies must complete 15 credits taken across at least three different programs. The minor requires students to take at least one Spanish course in the Modern Foreign Languages program, as well as one of the two English courses and one of the four history courses listed.

  • Legal Studies

    • Students must complete 15 credits in Legal Studies to earn this minor. Note that you cannot major in Legal Studies and minor in Legal Studies.

  • Mathematics

    • Students who wish to minor in Mathematics must complete at least 15 math credits not required to fulfill their major requirements. The student may choose from the following courses: course, course, course, course, course, or any level 300+ math courses.

  • Media Production

    • 15 Credits. Any grouping of (5) Media Production courses.

  • Media Studies

    • 15 Credits. Any grouping of (5) Media Studies courses.

  • Media Writing

    • 15 Credits. Any grouping of (5) Media Studies, Communication Studies, and English writing courses.

  • Music Production and Recording Arts*

    • 15 credits required.

  • Neuroscience***

  • Philosophy*

    • 15 credits required. Students who choose to minor in Philosophy must complete 5 courses in Philosophy with at least 3 courses in the 200-level or higher.

  • Psychology

    • Students with a major other than psychology may complete a minor in psychology. To complete a minor in psychology, students must take 15 psychology credits (5 courses) numbered 120 or above. These credits may not fulfill other requirements. 

  • Sociology

    • Students with a major other than sociology may complete a minor in sociology. To complete a minor in sociology, students must take 15 sociology credits (5 courses) numbered 120 or above. These credits may not fulfill other requirements.

  • Spanish

    • Students may minor in Spanish to complement any major. To complete the Spanish minor, students must take five courses in Spanish at the 120 level or above. This includes Spanish language classes as well as literature, culture, and film courses taught in Spanish.

  • Technoculture

  • Theatre Arts**

    • Students who choose to minor in Theatre Arts can complete it with 15 credits earned through five of the courses listed below. *At least TWO of these courses must be selected from the MEDA performance selections (246, 262, 263, 282).

  • Visual Arts**
