Program Description

The Spanish major provides students with a strong foundation in formal written and spoken Spanish, and a thorough understanding of the literature and cultural history of Latin America, Spain, and U.S. Latino communities. Through courses spanning a range of literary genres, film, music, and visual art, students learn to interpret literary works, analyze cultural productions and movements, and understand the experiences that shape Spanish-speaking communities. By the end of the program, students will be able to communicate effectively in Spanish, think critically about textual and cultural expressions, and apply their knowledge of Hispanic cultures in academic, professional, and community settings.

The Spanish major prepares students for careers in Spanish language and bilingual education, law, business, healthcare, social work, and other fields where bilingual communication, intercultural competence, and analytical skills are essential. The Spanish 4+1 programs provide clear pathways to Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or Business Administration, enabling students to complete a bachelor’s and master’s degree in just five years. With dynamic classes, supportive faculty, and personalized advising, the program combines the rigor of a liberal arts education with practical, career-focused outcomes.
