Science Fiction, more generally known as speculative fiction, attempts to imagine the future by recognizing and understanding the patterns of the world today. SciFi stories are therefore as much about today as they are about tomorrow; and they are almost always about the perils and adventures of change—the changes that the world, society, individuals, and humanity itself will undergo as a result of trends in contemporary culture, science, and technology. Students in this class will explore a variety of SciFi stories and visual media (shows and films), will learn about when and why SciFi emerged as a genre of literature, and will consider what power and value SciFi, and the study of it, might have for our lives, our world, and our future.
