The Adolescence Graduate Courses that must be completed for the B.A. degree are the following:
course - Educational Foundations from Diverse Perspectives
course - Foundations in Education for Students with Disabilities from Birth through Adolescence
course - Teaching English as a Second Language
course - Approaches to Literacy in Early Childhood through Adolescence
course- Educational Psychology and Adolescent Development
The above 15 credits are taken as an undergraduate student as part of the B.A. degree program. The remaining 15 credits are taken as a graduate student after receiving the B.A. degree and meeting the admission requirements for acceptance into the M.S. degree program. To complete the master’s degree in one calendar year, students must take two courses during summer session. Please see Graduate Catalog for course descriptions for the above courses and for specific requirements for the M.S. degree.
*Students in the 4+1 program must take course - Contemporary Issues in Childhood & Education Credits: 3, under the Social Perspectives General Education Disciplinary Grouping, as a general education elective
Graduate Progression Criteria
In the final undergraduate year, students in the B.A. History / M.S. Adolescence Education, Grades 7-12 program will be evaluated by the School of Education Associate Dean and graduate Program Director for a review of their qualifications to progress to the graduate education portion of the program, including:
Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and in Graduate Education courses
Submit a written Effective Educator Statement.
Students in the 4+1 program who do not meet the above criteria, will not be permitted to continue to the graduate education portion of the program. Their major will be changed to the B.A. History and the undergraduate degree will be conferred upon completion of the undergraduate program. Credits earned for graduate education courses taken will be applied to the undergraduate degree as elective credit.
Major Concentration in History:
Students must take nine (9) major courses numbered at the 200 or 300 level under the five fields of study: United States; Europe; Asia; Atlantic World; and Ideas, Theories, and Practices. For these nine (9) courses, students must take at least two (2) courses in three (3) fields of study. At least four (4) courses in the field of study must be taken at the 300-level.
In addition to the nine (9) field of study courses, majors are required to take three (3) courses on historical methodology.
The first, course - Intro Research Methods, requires successful completion of course as a prerequisite.
The second, course - Historiography/Historical Methods, may only be taken after the successful completion of 18 credits in history.
The final course, course - Senior Seminar in History, may only be taken after successful completion of course.
It is recommended that majors should not take more than one additional history course in the same semester as course and course because both courses require students to produce an original research project. course and course may not be taken concurrently.
