The Major Victorians

Description

Popular culture promotes the notion of Victorian society as prim and proper, and governed by rigid social and moral codes. Yet beneath this polished surface, life in the Victorian age was much more complex, full of social tensions, deceit, desire, poverty, gender inequality, secrecy, insecurity, and mysterious identities. Students in this course will examine both canonical and popular fiction, poetry, and drama that challenge the simplified image of the era, and that delve into the more complex and interesting truths behind the façade of Victorian propriety.
