Course Description

A survey of English literature from the mid-seventeenth century into the 20th century, examining major texts, genres, and historical contexts that shaped the English literary tradition. Emphasis is placed on the continuing development of literary form, language, and thematic concerns across changing social and cultural landscapes. Students may encounter drama, poetry, fiction, essays, and other genres, while exploring the contexts of the Restoration, Neoclassical, Romantic, Victorian, and Modernist periods from which the literature emerged. Students will develop skills in close reading, critical thinking, and literary analysis while considering how the themes and concerns of English writers continue to resonate in contemporary society.
