Course Description

This course explores witchcraft and the persecution of witches across different countries and centuries. Students will investigate the origins of
witchcraft beliefs and the social, political, and religious factors behind accusations and persecutions. Public hysteria over witchcraft often
reflected deeper tensions within society and government. Through primary and secondary sources, students will examine shifting and often
conflicting ideas about witchcraft, challenging their understanding of its historical significance. Topics include paganism, Christianity, the
Inquisition, the Reformation, gender and masculinity, science, medicine, and political power.
