School of Liberal Arts

Students in this course will read and explore ancient Greek and Roman epic, lyric, tragic, comic, and satirical poetry. Lectures and discussions will involve considerations of mythological, cultural, archaeological, historical, and philosophical perspectives as we mentally travel back through the mists of time in our attempt to reconstruct, recreate, and envision the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome. Students will consider how the writings from these ancient worlds still speaks to us today; will wonder about what wisdom might emerge from these writings of the past; and will question, in light of these classical texts, whether or not human nature and the human condition have changed over time.
