Course Description
An introduction to English literature from the Old English (early-medieval) period to the mid-seventeenth century, examining major texts, genres, and historical contexts that shaped the English literary tradition. Emphasis is placed on the development of literary form, language, and thematic concerns. Students may encounter heroic epics, romances and chivalric tales, mystery and miracle plays, fables and fabliaux, a wide range of poetry and lyric, and more, all while developing skills in close reading, critical thinking, and literary analysis. Attention will be given to how the themes and concerns of early English writers continue to resonate in contemporary society.
